The Road That Changed Everything For Me

There are some roads you remember because of where they took you.

And then there are roads you remember because of who you were when you traveled them.

I have one of those.

It wasn't a famous highway or somewhere you'd ever see on a travel brochure. It was just an old country road—the kind with fields stretching out on both sides, mailboxes leaning a little from years of weather, and enough distance between houses that the world gets quiet.

I had driven that road plenty of times before.

But that day was different.

Something in my life had changed, and I knew there was no going back to the person I had been before it happened.

I remember driving without being in much of a hurry to get anywhere. The road gave me time to think.

No traffic.

No noise.

No one asking me what I was going to do next.

Just the sound of the tires against the pavement and mile after mile of open country ahead of me.

Somewhere along that road, I realized something that has stayed with me ever since:

**Life doesn't always change at the places we expect it to.**

Sometimes it happens sitting at a kitchen table.

Sometimes it's a phone call.

Sometimes it's saying goodbye.

Sometimes it's meeting someone.

Sometimes it's finally deciding you've had enough.

And sometimes it happens on an ordinary backroad when nobody else in the world even knows you're having one of the most important moments of your life.

I couldn't see everything that was ahead of me that day.

I'm glad I couldn't.

There would be good years, difficult ones, people who stayed, people who left, mistakes I'd make, lessons I'd learn, and things I would eventually build that I couldn't have imagined back then.

But I kept going.

One mile at a time.

Maybe that's part of why this place is called **BackroadLove**.

Around here, backroads aren't just shortcuts between towns.

They lead to childhood homes, grandparents' houses, first dates, fishing holes, county fairs, old barns, new beginnings, and places we sometimes drive when we simply need room to think.

They carry pieces of our lives.

And I believe those pieces are worth remembering.

That's what I hope **Backroads** becomes here.

Not a place where everything has to be perfect.

Not another place to compete for attention.

A place to tell the stories that became part of us.

The funny ones.

The painful ones.

The ordinary ones we didn't realize were important until years later.

The people we don't want forgotten.

The places that still mean something.

And the moments when life quietly changed direction.

This is my first Backroad.

I hope it won't be the most important one written here.

I hope someday there are thousands of them—written by people from little towns, country roads, farms, neighborhoods, and communities everywhere.

Because everybody has traveled a road that changed them.

**What's yours?**
